winemaking Questions

  • Our Estate Vineyard is in the Applegate Valley AVA, but we source fruit from the Rouge Valley AVA as well.

  • Syrah is arguably the most consistent and most widely recognized variety for quality from the Applegate and Rogue valleys. Other varieties that perform well are Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc.

Some wineries have had some success with Tempranillo.

  • We make a wide range of wines, including sparkling wines, dry whites, Rose’, medium and full bodied reds and even sweet wines.

  • No. Sugar is found naturally in grapes, but yeast ferments that sugar and converts it into alcohol. Sometimes, we leave a small amount of natural sugar in the wine for balance, but it is very small.

  • Yes. We do not use any animal derived additives.

  • No. We do not use glyphosate.

  • Yes. We do use a minimum amount of sulfur dioxide in our winemaking in order to protect the wines from spoilage.

Sulfites do not cause headaches, and only a very small amount of people have a sensitivity to sulfites. There are more sulfites in dried fruit, pre-packaged salads, hot dogs and deli meats than is found in our wines.

  • Our Estate Vineyard and Winery are certified LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology). LIVE is a NW based organization that certifies and promotes sustainable winegrowing. LIVE certification covers the entire farm and encompasses diverse topics such as CO2 emissions, worker health and safety, best practices, and pollinator, fish and wildlife preservation. We feel that LIVE’s scientific basis and whole farm philosophy fit our own environmental priorities best.
