As opposed to Quady Winery, our family's first venture, located to the South of us in Madera, CA., long known for its outstanding dessert, Starboard and aperitif wines.
There is a reason that dry rosé is making a comeback in America. People are realizing that, when well made, this style is among the most versatile of all wines. Because of its natural levity, rosé can be enjoyed on its own, or paired with anything from a club sandwich on the patio, to the roasted ham on the holiday table. Being particularly partisan to rosé that is not only good, but interesting, Meloney Quady insisted that the winemaking staff keep all the drawdowns from the various lots separate until after fermentation. This allowed us to skilfully blend the various components, paying particular attention to color and body.
The name "4-2, A" was coined by our young daughter Margaux. During family dinners, "4-2,A" or "fortooay" (think Cabernet, Chardonnay, Viognier) was the varietal name she gave to her own impromptu blends of water and fruit juice.
The State of Jefferson was the name given to the areas of Southern Oregon and Northern California that briefly attempted to form their own state during the late 1940's. The name is in common usage among the residents today, often referring to a "State of Mind" that reflects independent thinking, support of local industry and self-reliance. In 2005, the Quady Family started searching for a property that would be an exceptional vineyard and winery site. Although the site settled on is arguably one of the finest in Southern Oregon, with 100 acres of south facing hillside, it also contained the remnants of an extensive moto-cross track and a plethora of rusting, non-functioning vehicles. 2005 and much of 2006 was spent removing trash, grading and preparing the site for our first estate vineyard. The moto-cross was the subject of considerable controversy in the neighborhood prior to our purchase of the property. There is still contention on the topic within our community.
Yes and No. In California, it is often added to Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot to fill in the mid-palate and add a spicy note. In Bordeaux, it is blended with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot to make red Bordeaux. However, each region and estate uses varying amounts. Some classic Bordeaux are even predominately Cabernet Franc, including the first growth Le Cheval Blanc, which is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot. In the Loire valley, it is made on its own, with the most famous example being the wines of Chinon. Our Cab Franc is similar in style to Chinon, and the “Arsenal” is patterned after Le Cheval Blanc.
This depends on the wine. We typically age the wines in bottle for one year before release. Our Cabernet Franc and Arsenal benefit from cellaring, and will soften and become more complex over 5-10 years. Some of the single vineyard Syrahs will also age very well, at least 5 years. The Syrah 4,2-a certainly improves over time, but will probably drink best within 5 years. We’ve been surprised by the longevity of our Viognier, but would still recommend consumption within a few years. The Rose should be consumed within the year of bottling.
